About Us

Why work with Family Growth Psychology

“There are two gifts we should give our children. One is roots and the other is wings.” — Unknown

Every child deserves to feel understood, supported, and empowered to navigate life’s challenges. At Family Growth Psychology in Bloomfield Hills, we believe that every child’s behavior is a form of communication. Our role is to help parents understand that communication, create a safe space for children to grow, and provide the support needed for families to thrive. Play therapy—the natural language of children—is at the heart of our work, allowing kids to express, process, and heal in ways that feel natural to them.

We also know that parenting can feel overwhelming. That’s why we partner with parents, giving them the tools, strategies, and confidence to support their children effectively. Our goal is to bring more clarity, ease, and joy into your family’s daily life.

Healing happens in the present moment. With the right support, kids and their parents can move from frustration and uncertainty to resilience, growth, and joy.

At Family Growth Psychology, we believe that:

Behavior is
communication

Kids aren’t “acting out”—they’re speaking in the only way they know how. Every behavior is a message, and it’s our job to listen.

Kids are kids,
adults are adults

Kids are meant to grow, explore, and make mistakes. It’s up to the adults to create the safety and structure they need to thrive.

Compassion is key
for every story

Every child and parent has a story. With understanding and compassion, healing and growth become possible—for kids and their families.

Our APPROACH

How our therapy works

Parent's Journey

We explore

We begin with an in-depth exploration of current challenges and sources of frustration, helping to uncover key areas of concern.

We learn together

Together, we identify and explore key pieces of support and knowledge that may be limiting your family’s well-being and goals.

We help you grow

With continued support, you’ll gain practical skills and strategies to reshape your family life and foster long-term growth.

Your Child’s Journey

We build a partnership

We start by partnering with you, the caregiver, to understand your child’s history, struggles, and needs.

We build a bond

Through a safe and trusting relationship, we help your child explore their emotions and experiences in a way that makes sense to them.

We help them discover the world

Using play therapy and developmentally appropriate approaches, we support your child in building resilience, confidence, and joy in everyday life.

All behavior is communication—we help you decode what your child is telling you.

FAQs

A missed session affects more than just your schedule—it impacts three people: you, your therapist, and another family who could’ve used that time.

Therapy sessions are reserved just for you. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice or don’t show up, there’s a $100 fee. The only exceptions are serious illness or emergencies.

To cancel, just reach out to your therapist directly or contact our front desk by phone or email.

We don’t bill insurance directly. However, we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Our fees for therapy in Bloomfield Hills range from $115 to $250 per session, based on your therapist’s experience and specialty. For up-to-date info, contact our front desk—they’ll walk you through your options and help you find the right fit.

We usually recommend starting with weekly sessions. This helps build a strong relationship and foundation for progress.

After about 8–10 sessions, we’ll reassess the frequency based on your goals and needs. This is true whether therapy is for you or your child.

Typically, no. Parents stay in the building, but not in the session. Kids tend to open up more freely when parents aren’t in the room.

That said, we believe therapy works best when parents are involved. You’ll have a parenting session every 4–6 visits to stay informed and supported. If family sessions are needed, your therapist in Bloomfield Hills will discuss that with you directly.

The first therapy session in Bloomfield Hills is for parents only—no kids. This gives us space to talk through concerns and history without little ears listening.

The second session is when we meet your child. From there, sessions may be with your child, you as the parent, or both—depending on your child’s treatment plan.

Children have the same right to confidentiality as adults. We won’t share details from sessions, but we’ll keep you in the loop through big-picture conversations and helpful insights. If something specific needs to be shared, we’ll work with your child to include you in that conversation.

Most of our therapy in Bloomfield Hills is offered in person—especially for kids under 12, since play therapy is most effective face-to-face. We do have a virtual platform available and may use it occasionally for parent sessions, teens, or when weather makes travel unsafe.

Kids in therapy in Bloomfield Hills have the same confidentiality rights as adults. We won’t share the specifics of what’s said in session.

That said, we do talk with parents in a general, thematic way—so you have the insight and tools you need to support your child well.

If your child talks about wanting to harm themselves or others, we are legally required to tell you. We’re always upfront with kids about when and why we might need to share something, and we include them in that process whenever possible.
