Is it ADHD? A learning disability? Something else?

When your child is struggling, it can be hard to know where to turn. If they are constantly distracted, restless, or frustrated with schoolwork, it can be a sign that something deeper might be going on. What may look like laziness, defiance, or giving up is often your child or teen’s way of communicating that they’re struggling and don’t know how to fix it.

Through psychological testing in Bloomfield Hills, we uncover what’s really behind your child’s challenges and give you a clear plan to support their success at school, home, and beyond.

Why psychological testing?

When kids and teens struggle with focus, learning, behavior, or emotions, it’s rarely just one thing. Attention issues can overlap with anxiety. A learning disorder might look like low motivation. Emotional struggles can hide behind disruptive behavior.

As a parent, you see the challenges, but it can seem like no matter what you try, nothing seems to make a lasting difference. Without clear answers, it’s easy to feel stuck and unsure how to help. That’s where we come in.

At Family Growth Psychology in Bloomfield Hills, we offer comprehensive educational, neuropsychological and intellectual evaluations for ages 4–16 to uncover what’s going on. Our fully licensed clinical psychologist looks at cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioral functioning to provide an accurate picture of your child’s needs. From there, we give you clear recommendations for school accommodations, therapy, and at‑home strategies, so that you can move forward with confidence. We deliver a detailed report (typically 10–20 pages) within 30–60 days, so you don’t have to wait months for answers.

Because when you have the right information, you can take the right steps to help your child thrive.

Is your child struggling with:

These challenges are your child’s way of showing something is getting in the way of their success. Through psychological testing in Bloomfield Hills, we find the answers that help them feel capable, understood, and supported.

Psychological testing can help with:

When kids struggle to focus, follow instructions, or manage their impulses, it can impact every part of their lives. ADHD testing helps determine whether ADHD is the right diagnosis, clarifies the type of attention challenges they face, and provides strategies and school accommodations that support their learning and daily functioning.

Difficulties in reading, writing, or math can signal a specific learning disorder or a unique learning style. Testing shows us where the challenges lie and guides interventions, tutoring, and accommodations so your child can learn in the way that works best for them.

Advanced abilities can sometimes mask learning or emotional needs, or create their own set of challenges, like boredom in class or social struggles. Psychological testing in Bloomfield Hills helps identify giftedness and ensures your child’s strengths are nurtured while addressing areas where they need support.

Whether your child needs a more supportive environment or extended time on standardized tests, evaluations provide the data schools require for 504 Plans, IEPs, and other accommodations that help students reach their full potential.

Frequent outbursts, irritability, or difficulty making or maintaining friendships can be signs of underlying emotional struggles. Testing can help uncover whether anxiety, depression, or another concern is contributing, so you can get the right supports in place.

Understanding how your child thinks, processes information, and solves problems provides valuable insight for both school and home. Psychological testing in Bloomfield Hills offers a detailed profile of their strengths and challenges, helping you and their educators tailor learning strategies to their needs.

Every child has their own spark. Our job is to help you understand what fuels it, so they can light up in the classroom, at home, and in life.

How we help families through testing

Behind every challenge is a story waiting to be understood. At Family Growth Psychology in Bloomfield Hills, we help uncover that story and advocate for kids, so that they can feel truly seen, parents feel empowered, and families can take the next steps forward with confidence and hope.

Comprehensive testing

Our evaluations help us understand your child as a whole person. While they’re solving puzzles, answering questions, or completing fun activities on the computer, we’re looking for patterns that explain how they learn, focus, and manage emotions; a process that helps us see both their strengths and where they might need extra support. The goal? A personalized roadmap that helps them succeed in school, at home, and beyond.

Parent partnership

You know your child best, and your insight is the most valuable piece of the puzzle. That’s why we keep you involved from the very first conversation. We’ll explain what the results mean (without the jargon), answer your questions, and give you strategies you can use right away. By the end, you’ll not only understand why certain challenges are happening, but you’ll have the tools to help your child thrive.

Psychological testing: FAQs

Got more questions? We’re here to help! Reach out anytime.

If your child wears glasses or hearing aids, make sure they bring them along. If they take daily medication, have them take it as they normally would. A good night’s rest makes a big difference, so try for an early bedtime the night before. Pack snacks and water; breaks are built in, and we want your child to feel comfortable and focused.

We’ll go over this together at the intake, but you might tell them: “You’ll be doing different activities; some on paper, some on the computer, and some that feel like games or puzzles. We’ll take breaks and make sure you’re comfortable the whole time.”

Yes, please bring any medical records, school reports, IEP or 504 plans, or notes from teachers, therapists, or doctors. If your child has had prior psychological or academic testing, bring those reports as well, as they help us see the full picture.

Not always. Sometimes testing confirms a diagnosis, and sometimes it rules one out. Either way, you’ll walk away with a clear understanding of your child’s cognitive, emotional, and academic profile, and specific recommendations that you can start using right away.

Testing is typically completed over one or two days, depending on your child’s age and stamina. After all assessments are done, it takes about 30–60 days to score, interpret, and prepare your child’s comprehensive report. Once it’s ready, we’ll schedule a feedback session to walk you through the results and recommendations in detail.

We test ages 4 to 16 and 11 months.

Insurance companies often limit the types of tests we can use and the amount of time we can spend on evaluations. These restrictions can get in the way of providing the most accurate and helpful results. By not billing insurance, we have the freedom to choose the best assessments for your child, take the time needed to fully understand their needs, and provide you with clear, individualized recommendations. While this does mean a higher out-of-pocket cost, it ensures your child receives the most thorough and meaningful evaluation possible.

Our comprehensive testing packages range from $3,500–$4,500. We know this is a significant investment, and we want you to understand what that means for your child and family.

Psychological testing is not just a series of assessments—it is a thorough process designed to provide clear answers, tailored recommendations, and a roadmap forward. The cost reflects:

  • Professional expertise – Your child’s evaluation is conducted by a licensed psychologist with specialized training and years of experience.

  • Comprehensiveness – We use a wide range of high-quality, research-backed tools to capture a full picture of your child’s strengths and challenges.

  • Personalized guidance – You’ll receive a detailed written report and a feedback session that provides actionable recommendations for school, home, and future supports.

  • Lasting impact – Families often return to these reports for years to guide educational planning, treatment decisions, and advocacy.

We see this process as an investment in your child’s future—one that can open doors to the right supports and help your family feel confident about the next steps.

Many families also choose to use HSA/FSA funds to help cover costs, and we are happy to provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

About Us

Why work with Family Growth Psychology

“There are two gifts we should give our children. One is roots and the other is wings.”Unknown

parents enjoying springtime outdoors with kids

Every child deserves to feel understood, supported, and empowered to navigate life’s challenges. At Family Growth Psychology in Bloomfield Hills, we believe that every child’s behavior is a form of communication. Our role is to help parents understand that communication, create a safe space for children to grow, and provide the support needed for families to thrive. Play therapy—the natural language of children—is at the heart of our work, allowing kids to express, process, and heal in ways that feel natural to them.

We also know that parenting can feel overwhelming. That’s why we partner with parents, giving them the tools, strategies, and confidence to support their children effectively. Our goal is to bring more clarity, ease, and joy into your family’s daily life.

Healing happens in the present moment. With the right support, kids and their parents can move from frustration and uncertainty to resilience, growth, and joy.

At Family Growth Psychology, we believe that:

Behavior is
communication

Kids aren’t “acting out”—they’re speaking in the only way they know how. Every behavior is a message, and it’s our job to listen.

Kids are kids,
adults are adults

Kids are meant to grow, explore, and make mistakes. It’s up to the adults to create the safety and structure they need to thrive.

Compassion is key
for every story

Every child and parent has a story. With understanding and compassion, healing and growth become possible—for kids and their families.

Our APPROACH

How our Psychological testing works

We start with you

The process begins with a one-on-one parent interview, lasting about one to two hours. We’ll talk about your child’s history, current concerns, school experience, and family background to give us a full picture before testing begins.

We get to know your child

Testing is tailored to your child’s age and needs, and usually takes 6–8 hours over one or two days. It can include completing puzzles, answering questions, working on the computer, or doing hands-on activities. We also gather input from teachers or other key people in their lives to ensure we’re seeing the whole picture.

We put it all together

We combine test results, history, and observations to arrive at an accurate understanding of your child’s strengths and challenges. You’ll receive a clear list of recommendations for school accommodations, parenting strategies, or referrals that you can use right away.

We guide you forward

In a dedicated feedback session, we walk you through your child’s results in plain language. You’ll leave with a detailed report (10–20 pages) that’s yours to share with teachers, therapists, or doctors so that everyone on your child’s team is working from the same playbook.
