Areas of focus
I specialize in supporting children, their parents, and their family. Life is not a straight line and often family gets upended without warning and without explanation. Oftentimes in these moments parents find themselves challenged by their role as parent and feel helpless to support their child through a time or experience that they are struggling to understand themselves. You may find your child experiencing loneliness, anger, outbursts, anxiety, sadness, perfectionism, aggression, and dysregulation, and as a parent you are not feeling equipped to support them. This can leave your child feeling alone and confused and you feeling helpless and guilty.
There are two aspects of child therapy that need to be cultivated. The first is of course the child. I create a safe and trusting relationship and space for your child. A place that they can come every week and unburden themselves, feel understood, and heal their wounds.
The second branch is my partnership with the parents. You are the ultimate support for your child and as such you carry the most power to help effect change for them. Together, we will explore how and what might be helpful for your child. In my partnership with you, I also recognize that your plate is already full and so I also create space for you, as a parent, to relieve some of the pressure and guilt that you are experiencing.
I have worked with kids and their families since the start of my career. I am beyond grateful to be able to witness the tension and overwhelm melt away from my clients and their parents and start a new path forward that is full of the easy moments and smiles together. I use a primarily play therapy based approach that is informed by biological underpinnings of behavior, cognitive behavioral (CBT) strategies, communication techniques, and interpersonal therapy.
In my work with children I often work with them through a combination of individual sessions, parenting sessions, and family sessions. I provide a unique structure of therapy to you and your child based on the challenges and needs of your family as well while taking into consideration the practical aspects of life, such as schedules and financial resources.
I understand that, at times, seeking support for yourself as a parent and/or for your child can bring along feelings of failure and guilt. The therapeutic process can feel invasive at first and requires you and your family to be very vulnerable. I am understanding of the blind trust you place in me when choosing me, and the courage that it takes to do so! These fears and worries will be met with compassion and understanding during our work together. Quickly your blind trust will develop into a strong therapeutic relationship.
When getting started with young children, I will meet first with parents only, to talk about history and go in depth about details of the current challenges. Then the second meeting I will get to meet your child, at this meeting they are able to choose if they feel comfortable to let you wait in the waiting room or if they would like you to come into session with them. Over time, I will build a strong therapeutic bond with them and eventually you will have 45-60 minutes of quiet time for yourself in the waiting room, while your child and I work together.
Child therapy, parenting work, and family sessions all have the ability to impact the lives of your kids, your family, and you in powerful ways. The mental and physical space that I create will make you and your child feel seen and understood. Beyond that, you will leave armed with knowledge and practical strategies to support your child in continuing their journey of growth outside the therapy setting.
Before you know it, our time together will be over, because you and your child will have found solid ground and the path forward together.
